The aquatic biologist will coordinate and implement the collection of chemical and biological samples from Lake Champlain and its major tributaries with a focus on Vermont; will coordinate and implement the collection of zebra mussel veliger samples in Lake Champlain and selected Vermont lakes; and will ensure data quality while helping to maintain the LTMP database. Other responsibilities include maintaining equipment and supplies, assisting with reporting, and conducting or assisting with monitoring and other activities undertaken by the VT DEC Watershed Management Division’s Lakes and Ponds Program.

The successful candidate will hold a degree in biogeochemistry, hydrology, biology, ecology, or a related natural resources field. Candidates who have taken a less traditional path may be considered if an aptitude for success and a strong willingness to learn is clearly apparent. Must have the ability to pilot and trailer a motorboat, including in windy conditions with significant waves. Must have knowledge of the principles and practices of biology and aquatic chemistry and familiarity with common stream and lake biological survey and sampling procedures.

This full-time position is based at the VT DEC, located at 1 National Life Drive in Montpelier, VT. Duties will be performed in both field and office settings, with significant field work in the spring and summer (April – October) and office work in the winter (November – April). Duties will require frequent travel to field sites throughout Vermont and the Lake Champlain Basin and occasional travel to various meeting locations in Vermont, New York, and Quebec, for which a private means of transportation and a valid driver’s license will be required. Some travel and field work will take place in Quebec, for which a valid passport or smart-license will be required. A boating license valid throughout the Lake Champlain Basin will also be required by the time of employment. After six months of employment, this position may be eligible for a partial telework schedule for office-based duties, subject to approval and determined by program and office needs.
