Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple. -- Dr. Seuss
After spending several years as a science educator, I decided to pursue a more hands-on science career and went back to school for a Master's degree in environmental science. While studying at Johns Hopkins, I became fascinated by the world of paleoecological proxies and learned for the first time what a diatom was. I did not study diatoms for my Master's degree, but when the opportunity later arose to join the periphyton group at Florida International University as a PhD student, I jumped at the chance to learn more about this field that had intrigued me for so long. Currently I am working towards a PhD in biology and I hope to develop a diatom-based reconstruction of past climate cycles and tropical storm activity in Florida.
