I am a professor at the University of Tennessee at Martin, a primarily undergraduate institution in northwest Tennessee. As a freshwater ecologist, I enjoy spreading the gospel of diatoms (and also the other algae and cyanobacteria) to my students in Martin and to students in my field course at our Reelfoot Lake Environmental Field Station in Samburg, TN.

I have studied how environmental conditions affect periphyton community structure in streams, ponds, lakes, and wetlands in Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, and Tennessee. I particularly enjoy exploring different microhabitats within the same ecosystem.
