Valves have an eccentric raphe, positioned on a keel. Striae are punctate. Fibulae are large and distinct.

The genus Grunowia includes the former Nitzschia sinuata (Thwaites) Grunow and Nitzschia sinuata var. tabellaria (Grunow) Grunow.
