Reproduction (sexual)
The purpose of this term is to bring attention to the work of Kaczmarska et al. (2013), which is used to supplement this glossary by covering this elaborate topic. This detailed work presents a set of proposed terms to describe sexual reproduction in diatoms, expanding on the terminology provided by Ross et al. (1979).
Steps of sexual reproduction in Encyonema reimeri beginning with two parental cells pairing within a mucilage copulation envelope (A) and ending with two auxospores continuing to expand and silicify (D) to become initial cells.
