Glossary

Like the rest of this website, the glossary is a work in progress. If we’ve missed a term, please contact us to let us know the term and references.

Rota

A rota is a type of velum consisting of one or more bars across an areola resembling a wheel with spokes with or without a widened area in the center. The plural is rotae. The structure is visible only with electron microscopy.

Members of the genus Melosira may have rotae on the internal valve wall.

Also see occlusion, which is a general term for covering.
