* recognition of Thalassiosira weissflogii as Spicaticribra weissflogii

Thalassiosira weissflogii has been without a great home for some time. Stachura-Suchoples and Williams placed it in the invalid genus Conticribra in 2009 where many have recognized it (the genus Conticribra is unquestionably invalid as Stachura-Suchoples transferred T. weissflogii to Conticribra in the original publication when T. weissflogii was already a generitype for Micropodiscus and Cymatotheca). Khursevich and Kociolek proposed the transfer of T. weissflogii to Spicaticribra as S. weissflogii in 2013. There may be further problems because Thalassiosira weissflogii appears to also be the generitype of two other genera: Micropodiscus, Cymatotheca, and it is equally possible it could be argued that the Spicaticribra/weissflogii need to be recognized in as one of those genera. I am going to reach out to Bart to take a look at the Micropodiscus issue and the likelihood that we need to propose a reorganization of this mess.

    Changes on DONA

    a) change Thalassiosira weissflogii to Spicaticribra weissflogii
    b) update genus description of Spicaticribra to reflect recent redefinition (Khursevich et Kociolek 2012)
    c) update genus description for Thalassiosira? remove any mention of continuous cribral plates
    d) Change biodata names, T. gessneri, T. pseudonana, T. guillardii, now all recognized as Spicaticribra species

    • Decussiphycus

The genus Decussata is not valid because the diatom genus name was not validly published (Art. 20.2, Ex. 4) as it was coined from a Latin technical term, namely decussatus, -a, um (adj. A). The name Decussata was replaced with the validly published genus Decussiphycus Guiry & Gandhi (2019) and typified by Decussiphycus placenta (Ehrenberg) Guiry & Gandhi.

    • update page for Mastogloia grevillei to Mastogloia danseyi f. grevillei

In a recent publication, Edlund and Burge (2019) solved Stoermer’s 50 yr old mystery on “Polymorphism in Mastogloia”. They used new samples and resurrected studies by Czarnecki and students to show temporal, geographic, genetic, and physiological lines of evidence that M. danseyi and M. grevillei are the same taxon, which exhibit two very different morphologies when cultured under different levels of solutes. Mastogloia danseyi is the older name so it has priority and is the type, with Mastogloia danseyi f. grevillei being recognized as an ecophenotype or form of the nominate.

    • Grunowia Describe the issues but not act

Confirm that all has been completed for the transfer & updates.

The genus Grunowia has come back into favor and is recognized on DONA with one species, G. solgensis. Two other species have been previously included in Grunowia—both are already found in DONA as Nitzschia taxa–N. sinuata, N. sinuata v. tabellaria. The genus Grunowia is characterized by eccentric raphe placement, large fibulae that do not extend across the whole valve face, and punctate uniseriate striae. There continues to be confusion/controversy on recognition of Grunowia and placement of taxa in it. Some suggest it should be recognized (Aboal et al. 2003) as originally suggested by Rabenhorst 1864, others have suggested that if Denticula tenuis (the lectotype of Denticula; Mann 1907) is to be included in Grunowia, then the taxa included in Grunowia should be recognized in Denticula (Liu et al. 2017).

    • Gomphonella – needs some investigation by someone

Adopt transfer of v. densistriatum to Gomphonella (Notulae Algarum?).

    • Lindavia/Pantocsekiella

Messy, discussions with Teo suggest that the Pantocsekiella is another way to cut up the tree based on Acs et al. evidence…

    Pantocsekiella K.T.Kiss & Ács

    Key Features:

Valve face divided into a polygonal central area and marginal striae zone.
Central area with papillae and punctate ornamentation.
Central ornamentations do not penetrate the frustule.
Striae are alveolate, terminating irregularly on the valve face.
Rimoportulae one, sometimes up to four, located marginally on the valve face among the striae.

Pantocsekiella was erected by Ács et al. (2016) to accommodate many of the smaller freshwater taxa traditionally placed in Cyclotella and more recently Lindavia (Nakov et al. 2015). Pantocsekiella is characterized by having a valve face divided into two zones, a polygonal central area and the marginal alveolate striae zone. The central area can be flat or undulate, ornamented with papillae and one to many fultoportulae. One (sometimes up to 4) rimoportulae occur marginally on the valve face, either at the end of a shortened striae or on a costae. However the key morphological distinctions from Lindavia are that in Pantocsekiella central area ornamentation is limited to fultoportulae that penetrate the frustule, there are no central area areolae, and the central area is often polygonal in shape (Acs et al. 2016).

Optional: Currently diatoms.org follows the taxonomy and genus-level phylogeny of Nakov et al. (2015) regarding diatoms historically placed in Cyclotella, however we recognize the work of Alexson et al. (2018) and Leuthje and Snyder (2021) accept the genus concept of Pantocsekiella and described novel taxa within Pantocsekiella. We continue to review and consider the work of Ács et al. (2016) and others and the placement of Cyclotella sensu lato taxa within Pantocsekiella and Lindavia.

      • Paraplaconeis—straightforward

Placoneis placentula and P. subplacentula have been transferred to Paraplaconeis, neither of these taxa are yet on DONA, P. placentula (and several forms/vars) have been reported in USA (Kociolek 2005, Bahls 2009).

        Changes on DONA
Need a genus page, a page for P. placentula

        • Navicymbula vs Seminavis - straightforward

Cox and Reid 2004 transferred Grunow’s Cymbella pusilla to the newish genus Seminavis. Krammer erected Navicymbula in 2003 and included Grunow’s Cymbella pusilla as the generitype. DONA recognized Navicymbula whereas Rioual et al. 2014 clearly says it belongs in Seminavis.

DONA: Need to critically look at Seminavis vs Navicymbula and decide where this taxon belongs, if in Seminavis, we need to transfer to Seminavis, probably retire the Navicymbula page.

DONA EDITORIAL ACTION: Note added to Achnanthidium exiguum:

Note that Kulikovskiy and Witkowski (2011) proposed the transfer of this taxon to the genus Lemnicola. The editors of this website propose that the transfer based on morphological features is not conclusive for this taxon. For example, some morphological characters would imply placement of A. exiguum in Psammothidium rather than in Lemnicola. Furthermore, Lemnicola has biseriate striae, while the striae of A. exiguum striae are uniseriate. Consequently, molecular data is necessary to place this taxon in the genus that conforms to its evolutionary lineage.

DONA EDITORIAL ACTION: Iconella/Surirella/Campylodiscus/Rhopalodia recognition and transfers are complete following Ruck et al. 2016.
