Valves are elliptic with rostrate apices. Raphe branches have a single groove at either side. The grooves are covered externally by non-porous conopea. Grooves and conopea are interrupted by central area. The raphe is straight with expanded external central raphe ends and terminal fissures deflected toward the secondary side. Striae are strongly radiate, becoming convergent near the apices. The central area is transverse, bow-tie-shaped and bordered by irregularly shortened striae.
Valvae ellipticae, apicibus late rostratis, 23-40 μm longae, 8-10 μm latae. Sulci utroque fissurae raphis latere, conopeis non porosis. Sulci et conopea area centralis interruptis. Raphe recta, extremis centralibus dilatatis, fussurae terminales deflectis ad latus secundum valvae. Striae valde radiantes, convergentes ad apices. Striae 20-22 in 10 μm in pars centralis, prope apicem 26-28 in 10 μm. Area centralis fasciam latam formans conspicue dilatata ad margines versus, ibi plerumque cum striis irregulariter abbreviatis. Valves elliptical with broadly rostrate apices, 23-40 μm long, 8-10 μm wide. Raphe branches with one groove at either side. Grooves covered externally by non-porous conopeum. Grooves and conopea interrupted by central area. Raphe straight with expanded central external endings and terminal fissures deflected towards secondary side of the valve. Striae strongly radiate, becoming convergent near apices. Striae 20-22 in 10 μm in the central part, 26-28 in 10 μm towards the ends. Central area transverse, bow-tie-shaped, bordered by irregularly shortened striae.

The 15 response plots show an environmental variable (x axis) against the relative abundance (y axis) of Sellaphora californica from all the stream reaches where it was present. Note that the relative abundance scale is the same on each plot. Explanation of each environmental variable and units are as follows:
ELEVATION = stream reach elevation (meters)
STRAHLER = distribution plot of the Strahler Stream Order
SLOPE = stream reach gradient (degrees)
W1_HALL = an index that is a measure of streamside (riparian) human activity that ranges from 0 - 10, with a value of 0 indicating of minimal disturbance to a value of 10 indicating severe disturbance.
PHSTVL = pH measured in a sealed syringe sample (pH units)
log_COND = log concentration of specific conductivity (µS/cm)
log_PTL = log concentration of total phosphorus (µg/L)
log_NO3 = log concentration of nitrate (µeq/L)
log_DOC = log concentration of dissolved organic carbon (mg/L)
log_SIO2 = log concentration of silicon (mg/L)
log_NA = log concentration of sodium (µeq/L)
log_HCO3 = log concentration of the bicarbonate ion (µeq/L)
EMBED = percent of the stream substrate that is embedded by sand and fine sediment
log_TURBIDITY = log of turbidity, a measure of cloudiness of water, in nephelometric turbidity units (NTU).
DISTOT = an index of total human disturbance in the watershed that ranges from 1 - 100, with a value of 0 indicating of minimal disturbance to a value of 100 indicating severe disturbance.
Diatoms of North America is running a fundraising campaign to keep the servers in operation. We need you to reach our $25,000 fundraising goal.
If you use and appreciate DONA, make your DONAtion today.
For the Gift Designation, type "diatom" in the search box and select "Diatom Lab Research Fund". This is the designated fund for diatoms.org.
