Achnanthidium deflexum can be distinguished from A. minutissimum by its broader valves, by areolae that can generally be resolved in LM, and by its strongly curved terminal raphe fissures. Achnanthidium deflexum differs from A. rivulare by its subrostrate valve ends, by areolae that can be resolved in LM, and by the presence of shortened striae usually visible in the middle portion of the valve. Achnanthidium pyrenaicum has anarrower, more lanceolate valve that is slightly asymmetrical to the apical axis. Achnanthidium gracillimum is similar to A. deflexum, but has capitate ends.
