The terminal raphe fissures of Achnanthidium minutissimum are not visible in LM. Also, A. minutissimum usually has more narrow valves. The striae of both A. minutissimum and A. atomus on rapheless valves meet at the sternum; these taxa lack a central area on the rapheless valve.
