Aulacoseira herzogii differs from A. granulata by very fine mantle areolae, almost indistinguishable in LM. The grooves in A. herzogii are positioned at a right angle in relation to the spines, while in A. granulata the grooves are adjacent to the spines. Aulacoseira granulata also has both separation valves and linking valves, whereas A. herzogii has only separation valves.
