Caloneis lewisii can be distinguished from C. lewisii var. inflata by the rounded, cuneate apices of the nominate variety. In contrast, the apices of C. lewisii var. inflata are rostrate. The central margin of C. ventricosa is not as distinctly expanded as in C. lewisii.
