Most Cocconeis species currently living in North American are much smaller than C. grovei. Cocconeis placentula has a larger length to width ratio (>1.6) and a narrow marginal area of striae on the raphe valve. Cocconeis klamathensis has more highly arched valves and a lanceolate marginal hyaline ring on the raphe valve. Cocconeis pediculus lacks a hyaline ring, has more highly arched valves, and a lower stria density on the rapheless valves (6-11 in 10 µm). Cocconeis rugosa has hyaline areas, branching from each apex.
