Valves of C. comensis are tangentially undulate, with secondary radial undulation. Cyclotella tripartita similarly has ornamentation in three wedge-shaped groups, but its valve face is radially undulate compared to the flat face of C. rossii. Both C. kuetzingiana and C. krammeri have much smaller central areas than C. rossii, with irregular, occasionally bifurcating striae giving the central area perimeter a 'ragged' appearance. Some specimens of C. ocellata may be difficult to distinguish from C. rossii. In general, C. ocellata shows 3 (sometimes 4-6) deep, concentric depressions and may have 3 large papillae or silica ‘balls’ on the valve face.
