Among the larger Cymbopleura species, C. apiculata, C. subcuspidata and C. subrostrata, the proximal raphe ends are shaped like crochet hooks, rather than simple expanded pores. Cymbopleura crassipunctata and C. heinii have more lanceolate valves, with a larger length-to-width ratio, and reverse-lateral raphe fissures. Cymbopleura lata has valves that are less than 30 µm wide and a much higher areola density.
