Cymbopleura incertiformis var. incertiformis has lanceolate valves with either unprotracted, or barely protracted, apices. Cymbopleura incertiformis var. linearis has linear valves with flat or slightly concave margins. Cymbopleura metzeltinii has rhombic-lanceolate valves. Cymbopleura florentina has moderately dorsiventral valves and a wider axial area.
