Although D. geminata is large and distinct in shape, some inexperienced users confuse it with species of Gomphonema and Gomphoneis, which may grow attached to surfaces by stalks. Didymosphenia clavaherculis is less capitate than D. geminata and has a more linear and narrow footpole.
