Compare

The stria density of Encyonema aueri is lower, at 8-10 in 10 µm. The central area of E. thermale is less asymmetric and the valve breadth is greater than in E. norvegicum. Encyonema hebridicum has an arched ventral margin and, usually, a rounded central area.
