The valve shape of F. tenera is somewhat similar to F. crotonensis. However, valves of F. crotonensis are larger than F. tenera and have an inflated central margin. In addition, F. crotonensis forms ribbon-like colonies composed of several to hundreds of frustules, while F. tenera rarely forms colonies.
