Geissleria punctifera differs from G. lateropunctata by lanceolate valves with broadly subrostrate apices. Valves of G. punctifera are wider, elliptical-lanceolate, with narrowly rostrate or subrostrate apices . G. punctifera has one isolated areola in the central area, while G. lateropunctata has one to five isolated areolae.
