Gomphoneis linearis has a more linear valve outline and radial striae throughout the valve, especially around the central area. In addition, the central area of some G. linearis specimens have 1-2 slightly shortened radial striae that form a rhombic central area. Apical spines may be present. Small specimens of G. minuta could be confused with G. oreophila, but the longitudinal lines of G. minuta are positioned midway between the axial area and valve margin.
