Kurtkrammeria weilandii may be distinguished from other species of Kurtkrammeria by the size and shape of the valve, spacing of the median striae, and the presence or absence of a stigma. Kurtkrammeria weilandii and other species of Kurtkrammeria have striae that are convergent at the apices. In Encyonopsis, striae are always radiate or parallel at the apices. Some species of Kurtkrammeria have a stigma; a stigma is never present in Encyonopsis. Valves of Gomphonema species are asymmetric to the transapical axis, with a head pole and a foot pole, and symmetric to the apical axis. In Kurtkrammeria, valves are asymmetric to the apical axis and symmetric to the transapical axis. If present, apical pore fields of Kurtkrammeria species are located at both poles, not just the foot pole as in Gomphonema species,
