Luticola stigma is similar in size, shape and stria density to L. mitigata. However, valve protraction is more less gradual and occurs closer to the apices in specimens of L. mitigata, whereas the valve begins to taper gradually and nearer to mid-valve in L. stigma. Levkov et al. (2013) note that L. mitigata has "consistently narrower rounded valve apices". These two taxa may be conspecific, so further examination is needed.
