Pseudostaurosira trainorii has a similar size range and stria density. Pseudostaurosira trainorii has a narrow axial area and striae are parallel, rather than radiate.

The striae of Aulacoseira alpigena do not continue onto the valve face from the mantle. Also, A. alpigena has a wider valve mantle.

Cyclotella atomus also has a similar size range, but the striae are regularly placed around the circumference of the valve. Furthermore, central and marginal fultoportulae are present.
