Valves of N. subrhynchocephala are linear-lanceolate with rostrate to subcapitate apices. Proximal raphe ends of N. subrhynchocephala are deflected to the secondary side of the valve, not straight. Navicula cryptocephaloides has narrower valves and higher stria and areola densities than N. bourellyivera.
