Craticula coloradensis can be distinguished from other large Craticula taxa by its fusiform valve shape and unprotracted ends. Craticula cuspidata has valves that are more strongly tapered and have a higher transapical stria density. Craticula acidoclinata has narrow, rostrate apices and weakly radiate transapical striae. Craticula johnstoniae has narrower valves with rostrate to subcapitate ends, narrower breadth, a higher transapical stria density and an expanded central area. Craticula pampeana has much larger valves, slightly protracted, rounded apices and a lower transapical stria density. Craticula sardiniana has smaller valves with broadly rounded, subrostrate apices and an expanded central area.
