There are many small Fallacia and Pseudofallacia species which should be compared to this taxon. Navicula hodgeana is similar to F. subhamulata in shape and size, but may be distinguished by the single row of areolae adjacent to the axial area, the more widely spaced striae and the elevated, curved axial area. Pseudofallacia losevae has a similar axial area, but has an elliptic to lanceolate valve with radiate striae and a distinct central area. Fallacia dithmarsica and F. tenera have similar punctate striae, but the elliptic valve shape, more lyrate hyaline region on the valve face and 2–3 areolae in each stria along the valve margin are unique.
