Navicula kotschyi is very similar morphologically to N. savannahiana and N. texana, and possibly conspecific with both. Type specimens of N. texana are considerably broader and less linear than N. kotschyi. It may not be possible to discriminate between N. savannahiana and N. kotschyi, if they are indeed heterospecific.
