Identification

Description

Valves are lanceolate with protracted, subrostrate ends. The axial area is narrow and linear. The central area is small. Striae are radiate in the center and convergent at the apices, numbering 14-16 in 10 µm. Areolae are approximately 32-36 in 10 µm and hardly distinguishable in LM. Striae are bent in the middle of the valve. Short striae often alternate with longer ones around the central area.

The original description includes larger specimens with rostrate-capitate apices; we have not encountered similar specimens in North American collections.

Note that N. metareichardtiana Lange-Bert. and Kusber 2019 is a replaced name for N. reichardtiana Lange-Bert. in Lange-Bert. and Krammer 1989. (See UPDATES tab)

Updates

May 25, 2019 - Replaced name

From 8/23/2011 until 8/25/2019 this taxon appeared on this site as Navicula reichardtiana Lange-Bert. in Lange-Bert. and Krammer 1989. Kusber and Lange-Bertalot (2019) recognized that N. reichardtiana is an illegitimate name:

"Unfortunately, the name Navicula reichardtiana (Grunow) Migula had already been validly
published 1906 by Migula (in Migula 1905-1907) for a naviculoid diatom, based on Schizostauron
reichardtianum Grunow (Grunow 1867), a marine species named for Dr. [H.W.] Reichardt (1835-
1885) who provided the material from isles of the Kvarner Gulf, Croatia. This name with uncertain
generic affiliation renders Lange-Bertalot’s name a later homonym. We here replace the illegitimate
name by a replacement name." Kusber and Lange-Bertalot (2019)

The replacement name, N. metareichardtiana Lange-Bert. and Kusber 2019 is now reflected on this page. - S. Spaulding

Responses

The 15 response plots show an environmental variable (x axis) against the relative abundance (y axis) of Navicula metareichardtiana from all the stream reaches where it was present. Note that the relative abundance scale is the same on each plot. Explanation of each environmental variable and units are as follows:

ELEVATION = stream reach elevation (meters)
STRAHLER = distribution plot of the Strahler Stream Order
SLOPE = stream reach gradient (degrees)
W1_HALL = an index that is a measure of streamside (riparian) human activity that ranges from 0 - 10, with a value of 0 indicating of minimal disturbance to a value of 10 indicating severe disturbance.
PHSTVL = pH measured in a sealed syringe sample (pH units)
log_COND = log concentration of specific conductivity (µS/cm)
log_PTL = log concentration of total phosphorus (µg/L)
log_NO3 = log concentration of nitrate (µeq/L)
log_DOC = log concentration of dissolved organic carbon (mg/L)
log_SIO2 = log concentration of silicon (mg/L)
log_NA = log concentration of sodium (µeq/L)
log_HCO3 = log concentration of the bicarbonate ion (µeq/L)
EMBED = percent of the stream substrate that is embedded by sand and fine sediment
log_TURBIDITY = log of turbidity, a measure of cloudiness of water, in nephelometric turbidity units (NTU).
DISTOT = an index of total human disturbance in the watershed that ranges from 1 - 100, with a value of 0 indicating of minimal disturbance to a value of 100 indicating severe disturbance.
