Navicula peregrina is distinguished from N. vulpina by having more widely spaced striae in the central area, coarser areolae, and different autecological preferences. Navicula peregrina is found in brackish water streams, rather than freshwater habitats. It is distinguished from N. vaneei, N. slesvicensis and N. streckerae by its larger valves that lack protracted ends.
