Compare

This species is distinguished from other lineolate Navicula species by the shape of the valves, the protracted apices and the length to width ratio (relatively low). 

Navicula trivialis has subrostrate apices, an elliptic central area bounded by mostly shortened striae (not alternating long-short striae) and has visible lineolae.
