Compare

Nitzschia perminuta is more robust and wider than N. hantzschiana. In addition, N. perminuta lacks a central nodule, a feature that further distinguishes it from N. hantzschiana. Some reports of N. perminuta from Oregon, Idaho and Montana have been misidentifications of N. oregona, which is more slender and linear.
