The apices of N. sigma are capitate and more strongly curved than those in N. filiformis. Nitzschia sigma has apices that are more strongly constricted than those in N. clausii. The raphe of N. sigma follows the valve margin, while the raphe of N. clausii curves away from the margin near the valve center.
