Compare

Odontidium mesodon does not have as great a maximum length, valves are more rhombic and apicies are more apiculate. In addition, the axial area of O. mesodon is more narrow, costae are more often primary, extending fully across the valve. Diatoma moniliformis valves are much narrower and costae are less dense.
