Frustules are heavily silicified. Valves are disc shaped, containing 2–4 (usually 3) carinoportulae. Ridges are present on the valve margin and continue on the mantle. Simple, solid, linking spines extend from the ridges. The linking spines spines fit into gaps between ridges of adjacent cells to form chains.
