Pinnularia cardinalis is somewhat similar in outline in the shape of the central area, but valves are much larger and have a complex raphe.
Pinnularia cuneicephala is similar in size and has a thickened sternum and cuneate apices. The apices of P. cuneicephala, however, are more acute and not rounded. Pinnularia cuneicephala also has a much wider axial area and lacks a fascia.
