Pinnularia pulchella var. canadensis and P. pulchella are quite similar and both taxa have a gibbous center and rounded apices. Pinnularia pulchella, however, has a more gibbous expansion in the central valve.
Pinnularia domingensis has a longitudinal line that crosses the striae further away from the axial area.
Pinnularia ectorii is similar in shape and size, however, it has a lower stria density (5–6 stria in 10 µm).
