Pinnularia viridiformis is similar in valve dimensions and stria density, but differs by solitary habit, slightly convex or triundulate valves, narrow axial area and striae that are radiate in valve center and convergent at the ends.

The tropical diatom P. latevittata is similar in valve shape and the ability to join cells in colonies by their girdle sides, but differs by its much larger size.
