Compare

Pinnularia neomajor var. frequentis (originally described from New Zealand) is similar in valve outline, but smaller, with valve width 20-22 μm, higher stria density (8–9 in 10 μm), and lacks spines.

Pinnularia gentilis is known from Europe and has wider valves with slightly capitate apices, strongly convergent striae at valve ends, and lacks spines.
