Pinnularia brevicostata is larger (up to 150 µm) and lacks the gibbous center and mottled valve surface. Pinnularia cuneicephala has cuneate apices and a sinuous outer fissure of the raphe. Pinnularia nobilis is much larger with convergent striae near the apices.
