Stauroneis acuta is very similar, except it is larger and has less gibbous valves. Stauroneis americana is also similar, with prominent pseudosepta at valve ends, but is generally smaller and has lanceolate valves. Stauroneis rex and S. phoenicenteron are also large, but lack conspicuous septa and pseudosepta.
