Stauroneis boyntoniae belongs to the group of Stauroneis species with small to medium valves, fine striae and transapically elongated and irregularly spaced areolae. This taxon may be distinguished from the other species by the size, broadly lanceolate valve shape and narrow, subrostrate to apiculate apices. Valves of Stauroneis neohyalina are more narrow (6–9 μm) and the stria density is higher (32–40 in 10 μm). The valves of S. siberica are larger (54–68 μm long by 12–16 μm wide), more elliptic and the apices are abruptly protracted.
