Stauroneis smithii has pronounced triundulate valves with very weakly radiate striae. Valves of S. smithii var. incisa are less than 6 µm wide. Stauroneis smithii var. sagitta has narrow lanceolate valves 4-5 µm wide. Stauroneis ignorata and S. ignorata var. rupestris have parallel striae. Stauroneis prominula has linear valves with parallel or slightly concave margins. Stauroneis undata has a wide stauros shaped like a bow tie and broad, bluntly rounded apices.
