Compare

Stauroneis separanda has smaller valves with more prominent apices. Unlike small valves of S. smithii, which have smooth margins, small valves of S. separanda possess triundulate margins. Stauroneis smithii var. incisa has narrower valves and a much higher stria density than S. smithii.
