Staurophora brantii has rhombic-lanceolate valves 38-48 μm long. The apices are indistinctly protracted and broadly rounded. The central area is a relatively broad transverse fascia that widens in deltoid fashion towards the valve margins. Unlike species of Stauroneis, Staurophora brantii has a single lobed chloroplast and prefers waters with elevated electrolytes (see Autecology).
