Stephanodiscus binderanus var. oestrupii has a lesser mantle height and complex branching of the spines. Cyclostephanos invisitatus has greater areola and fascicle density, and branching fascicles. Stephanodiscus parvus has shallow mantles, a distinct central fultoportula and higher areola density. Stephanodiscus hantzschii and S. hantzschii f. tenuis have larger valves, shallow mantles and triseriate fascicles.
