Tabellaria flocculosa has a hyaline central area, marginal spines, closed girdle bands and rudimentary septa. In addition, T. flocculosa has less capitate apices than T. fenestrata. Tabellaria flocculosa var. linearis is similar to T. fenestrata in that they both lack a hyaline central area. Unlike T. fenestrata, however, T. flocculosa var. linearis has marginal spines and closed girdle bands.
