In order to make an apple pie from scratch you must first create the universe. – Carl Sagan
I study biology and environmental studies as an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota, Morris, where I accidentally stumbled upon diatoms and instantly became fascinated. Shortly after, I got the chance to study them in depth at the diatoms course at Iowa Lakeside Lab. I’m currently working on a project at the St. Croix Watershed Research Station in Stillwater, MN, looking at alternative stable states in prairie pothole lakes via sediment core analysis. After graduating, I hope to continue studying diatoms both in prairie lakes affected by intensive agriculture and in parts of the Brazilian Amazon affected by similar practices.
