Identification

Description

Valves are disc shaped. The valve face has a distinctly raised or depressed flat central area located about 1/2 between the valve center and margin. The central area contains areolae and fultoportulae in a weakly radiate pattern. In some specimens, a hyaline annulus is present at the center of the valve. Marginal alveolate striae in the outer 1/2 of the valve are radiate. In some specimens, the striae are split into two or three anastomosing branches. One to three rimoportulae are present on the valve face, typically located at the fork of a thickened rib or costa half way from the central area to the valve face-mantle junction. Fultoportulae are present at the valve margin on marginal ribs and aligned with every 4th or 5th stria.

The population observed here differ slightly from the lectotype population described by Houk et al. (2010, Pl 242, 243) by having more areolae in the central area. This population also lacks the hyaline brim of the central area as is typical of the lectotype population.

Autecology

This taxon is a planktonic species found primarily in freshwater lakes, especially during periods of stratification. It is considered ecologically similar to other species in the Lindavia bodanica sensu lato group. This group consists of species that are low nitrogen specialists that have high light requirements (Interlandi et al. 1999). These species are able to remain suspended in the epilimnion of stratified lakes (Saros et al. 2003). The species has been reported to occur at pH around 7 and salinity optimum of 1.8 g/L(Soninkhishig et al. 2003).

Original Description

Responses

The 15 response plots show an environmental variable (x axis) against the relative abundance (y axis) of Lindavia affinis from all the stream reaches where it was present. Note that the relative abundance scale is the same on each plot. Explanation of each environmental variable and units are as follows:

ELEVATION = stream reach elevation (meters)
STRAHLER = distribution plot of the Strahler Stream Order
SLOPE = stream reach gradient (degrees)
W1_HALL = an index that is a measure of streamside (riparian) human activity that ranges from 0 - 10, with a value of 0 indicating of minimal disturbance to a value of 10 indicating severe disturbance.
PHSTVL = pH measured in a sealed syringe sample (pH units)
log_COND = log concentration of specific conductivity (µS/cm)
log_PTL = log concentration of total phosphorus (µg/L)
log_NO3 = log concentration of nitrate (µeq/L)
log_DOC = log concentration of dissolved organic carbon (mg/L)
log_SIO2 = log concentration of silicon (mg/L)
log_NA = log concentration of sodium (µeq/L)
log_HCO3 = log concentration of the bicarbonate ion (µeq/L)
EMBED = percent of the stream substrate that is embedded by sand and fine sediment
log_TURBIDITY = log of turbidity, a measure of cloudiness of water, in nephelometric turbidity units (NTU).
DISTOT = an index of total human disturbance in the watershed that ranges from 1 - 100, with a value of 0 indicating of minimal disturbance to a value of 100 indicating severe disturbance.
