Achnanthidium latecephalum differs from A. duthiei, A. pyrenaicum and A. gracillimum by its broadly rostrate or subcapitate apices; it also differs from A. duthiei by being smaller in size with a higher striae density; it differs from A. reimeri in the absence of central areas on both valves and by a lower striae density in the valve center.
